The Hyundai story started in 1947, when Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. Twenty years later the Hyundai Motor Company was established. The new firm's first model, the Cortina, was released in 1968. And so a storied automaker came to exist.
The first Hyundai vehicles made their American debut in 1986. While the automaker was recognized by American press for their affordability, it didn't take long before consumers caught onto the impressive engineering quality at the core of the company's models. To prove the company's faith in its product, they introduced a 10-yeart/100,000-mile warranty for each vehicle sold in the United States.
Originally known for their line of midsize sedans, Hyundai has expanded their offerings to include coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, crossovers, and SUVs. Recently, the company has made a significant investment in future engine technologies. Today Hyundai produces hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric, and fuel-cell models.
Hyundai also is the power behind the Kia brand, purchased a majority of that automaker in 1998. Then there's Genesis, Hyundai's well-received foray into the luxury vehicle market. Hyundai now ranks among the 100 most valuable brands in the world. The company also regularly ranks near the top on J.D. Power and Associates initial quality surveys.
